The connection between skincare and gut health may seem like a surprise to some, but it is indeed a complex and critical relationship. The skin and the gut are two of the body's most important organs and both play a crucial role in maintaining overall health. In this article, we will explore the reasons why skincare can impact our gut health and how you can look after your skin and microbiome in tandem.

The Skin is our first line of defence

One of the more obvious links to skin and out gut is that our skin acts as a barrier, our body's first line of defence in protecting itself from harmful substances. When this barrier is disrupted, such as through the use of harsh chemicals and toxic skincare products, it can allow these harmful substances to enter the body and impact the gut. For example, some skincare products contain harmful chemicals and preservatives that can irritate the skin and disrupt the gut microbiome such as benzene, parabens and sulphates. These harmful chemicals can lead to an increase in toxic load and negatively impact our digestive health, causing inflammation, and other health issues.

The Skin is a conductor to the bloodstream

The second reason is that the skin is a pathway for the absorption of ingredients in skincare products. When we apply skincare products to our skin, they are absorbed into the bloodstream and can reach the gut. Some ingredients, such as fragrances, parabens, and phthalates, can have a negative impact on the gut microbiome and contribute to gut problems. It is essential to be mindful of the ingredients in skincare products and choose products that are made with natural, non-toxic ingredients.

The Skin is the largest organ of our body

Not only does the skin hold our body together but it also plays a crucial role in providing an air and water tight flexible barrier between the outside world and the highly regulated systems of the body It also helps with temperature regulation, immune defence, vitamin production, and sensation.

It is no suprise then that Skincare has a significant impact on gut health and vice versa. By choosing skincare products that are made with natural, non-toxic ingredients, avoiding harsh chemicals, managing stress, and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, it is possible to improve both skin and gut health. It is important to be mindful of the connection between the two and to take steps to ensure that our skincare routine is supportive of overall health and wellness.
